about

Toronto Tapes is a mixtape of field recordings made on a Sony Walkman in venues, train cars, streets and my Grandmother’s apartment in Toronto, Spring 2012. On it the listener will encounter conversations, buskers, trains, toy accordion, surprise celebrations, hustle and bustle, an explanation of what a theremin is, text by Georges Perec, a performance at the iconic venue Somewhere There (in it’s 2nd life), Céline Dion, the comforts of the traveller and the alienation of the modern metropolis.

I made this new version of the tapes on my commute to and from the Globe Theatre where I was composing and performing for Abigail Graham’s production of the Merchant of Venice in Spring 2022. (Abigail put me onto taking the overground train from Finsbury Park to Blackfriar’s which is actually quiet enough to work on and the ideal place to revisit this material). The sounds you hear are almost entirely unprocessed, appearing as a montage of lived musical experiences that coalesce, intersect and overlap as each one follows its own trajectory, now playful, now serious, always truthful in its own process of becoming.
